Prayer based on Exodus 21

Almighty Lord, You have rescued us from the most horrible bondage. We are Your servants, O Lord. Yet You have made us sons by adoption through Jesus Christ. We have done much that is wrong. Some things are the sorry yield of some mistake or irresponsibility, but many other sins involve intentional wrongdoing. How can there be hope for us? There is sorrow upon sorrow in this world, and even the best system of justice cannot overturn the trouble that is all around us. What can be the answer to this misery? There is guilt in us for all kinds of misconduct, foolishness, and accident. A ransom needs to be paid. The duty of restitution and the penalties of further just compensation suggest an overwhelming debt. Who can make things whole again? We thank You sincerely and joyfully for the full answer to sin that has come to us through Your Son. We rejoice in the cross, and we look with a confident expectation to the promised new heavens and earth which Your Son will surely bring.
