Apostles Creed, #19

Continuing in the Apostles Creed... I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven,

"And is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty."

The Scriptures give us a number of great accounts of those once low who were suddenly and remarkably brought to sit at the right hand of the greatest earthly power. The stories of Joseph, Daniel, Nehemiah, and Mordecai prepare us for a Messiah who will have supreme power and authority.

Jesus, though He was fully equal in divinity to the Father as the eternal Son of God, willingly humbled Himself in order to suffer as a Man on behalf of His Israel. He was then lifted up again to the highest position of honor and glory.

Psalm 110 speaks mysteriously of two who are both called by the name "Lord." The Father instructs the Son of God to sit at His right hand. This Son is said to be both Priest and King. He reigns on high until God makes His enemies His footstool. This victorious warrior is ruling in heaven. He has spoken peace to Israel, a peace that He has secured with His life.

Psalm 110:1 The Lord says to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.”

2 The Lord sends forth from Zion
your mighty scepter.
Rule in the midst of your enemies!
3 Your people will offer themselves freely
on the day of your power,

in holy garments;

from the womb of the morning,
the dew of your youth will be yours.

4 The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever
after the order of Melchizedek.”

5 The Lord is at your right hand;
he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will execute judgment among the nations,
filling them with corpses;
he will shatter chiefs

over the wide earth.
7 He will drink from the brook by the way;
therefore he will lift up his head.

Esther 10:2 And all the acts of his power and might, and the full account of the high honor of Mordecai, to which the king advanced him, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia? 3 For Mordecai the Jew was second in rank to King Ahasuerus, and he was great among the Jews and popular with the multitude of his brothers, for he sought the welfare of his people and spoke peace to all his people.
