Psalm 140

Pretending that there is no evil in the world does not make it disappear. Not only is there evil all around us, but evil is personal. There are evil men and evil angels. But we cry out to God, who is over all, and who is very good.

Evil men make plans to accomplish evil deeds. They are violent. Their hearts are full of malice toward God and His humble servants.

We do not see all of this. That puts us in a perilous situation. But the Lord guards His servants. We can cry out to Him for help, and He delivers us from the violence of wicked men.

The Lord is committed to the glory of His Name, and in Him, we have safety. Though those who hate Him and us may seem to win the day for a time, they will not be exalted forever.

There is a supreme evil one, that serpent of old who said to Eve, “You will not surely die.” His end is in the lake of fire. Even now he is bound, at least to the extent that the Lord has decreed, so that he will no longer keep the nations from the good news of redemption through the provision of Jesus Christ.

Jesus.

In my distress, I sometimes forget about Jesus. I don't know why that happens. Is there an enemy that would like me to remember my distress, but forget the Name of the One who has delivered me from the prison house of sin?

But then the Lord reminds me about the Messiah. Jesus knew what was in a man. He deliberately fell into an evil trap in order to defeat evil forever. His enemies thought that they had defeated Him, but it was Satan who was exposed. Jesus disarmed demonic rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in the cross.

I just remembered Jesus again today. The Righteous One who died on a cross had a full victory over the grave. We are found in Him, in His death, and in His resurrection.

Today the righteous may be afflicted. Yes, that may be. But God will vindicate Christ and His beloved church. We will give thanks to the Lord, and dwell with Him forever. And it is all because of Jesus.
